Agadir Allocates 1.1 Billion Dirhams for the Reconstruction of Hassan II Regional Hospital

The Moroccan city of Agadir is set to undergo a significant transformation in its healthcare infrastructure with the announcement of a substantial investment of 1.1 billion dirhams dedicated to the reconstruction of the Hassan II Regional Hospital. This initiative, spearheaded by Health and Social Protection Minister Amine Tehraoui, aims to replace the current facility, which has been deemed outdated, with a state-of-the-art medical center that meets contemporary healthcare standards.

During a meeting held on March 19, 2026, attended by regional officials including the wali of the Souss-Massa region, Saïd Amzazi, the ministry outlined the ambitious plans for the new hospital. The forthcoming structure will feature advanced medical equipment and enhanced services, particularly in emergency care and oncology. Designed to accommodate between 415 and 450 beds across four floors, the new hospital will be constructed on the existing site, ensuring that it remains accessible to the community during the transition.

With its estimated construction cost of approximately 1.1 billion dirhams, the project is expected to significantly enhance the quality of healthcare services available to residents in the region, addressing the increasing demand for efficient medical care. The current Hassan II Regional Hospital, established in 1961, no longer meets the necessary standards for infrastructure and patient care, necessitating this comprehensive overhaul.

To facilitate the timely commencement of construction, the hospital will temporarily close its doors at the end of March 2026. During this period, urgent cases, deliveries, and hospitalizations will be redirected to the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir. Routine consultations and examinations will continue at a designated day clinic within the hospital complex, and community health centers will maintain their operations to provide essential support and referrals.

Additionally, the ministry has committed to reorganizing and reallocating human resources within the region, ensuring that staff rights are upheld throughout this transitional phase. This redevelopment initiative marks a pivotal step towards improving healthcare access and quality for the citizens of Agadir and the surrounding areas.
