Agadir's Inaugural Hotel Industry Forum

On Thursday, Agadir hosted its first regional hotel industry forum, an initiative spearheaded by the Agadir Souss-Massa Regional Hotel Industry Association (ARIH-ASM) in collaboration with the Souss-Massa Regional Tourism Council (CRT Souss-Massa). This significant event took place against a backdrop of remarkable tourism growth, showcasing a vibrant ecosystem eager to engage in meaningful dialogue regarding the future of the hotel sector in the region. The forum provided a platform for various stakeholders, including tourism accommodation operators, public institution representatives, industry experts, and technology and equipment suppliers, to come together and discuss critical industry issues.

The primary objective of this gathering was to confront existing observations and experiences while identifying actionable strategies to enhance the long-term competitiveness of the hotel industry. As the expectations of travelers evolve, it became imperative to place the challenges faced by the hospitality sector at the forefront of collective discussions aimed at shaping the future of the Agadir Souss-Massa destination. Participants underscored the urgent need for quality enhancement, alongside the acceleration of energy and digital transitions that the industry must undertake to remain viable in an increasingly competitive landscape.

The Necessity for Collective Action in Transformation

Abdelhak Chahili, president of ARIH-ASM, emphasized that while the region's hospitality sector possesses numerous strengths, its transformation requires a unified effort and a shared vision. He stated that ARIH-ASM's responsibility is to assist establishments in improving quality, facilitate their adjustment to new standards, and encourage investments that will sustainably enhance their performance. The collaboration of industry professionals, institutional actions, and the expertise of partners is crucial in bolstering the competitiveness of the Agadir destination.

As of August 2026, the region has seen a solid trajectory of growth, registering 1.012 million visitors (an increase of 4.59%) and 4.6 million overnight stays (an increase of 6.71%) from January to August. However, the regional hospitality sector faces the dual challenge of capitalizing on the increasing visitor numbers while undergoing profound organizational, energy, and digital transformations. The discussions at the forum allowed for a comparison of on-the-ground diagnostics with overarching strategic directions, highlighting the continuous adaptation of accommodation offerings as essential to maintaining the attractiveness of the Souss-Massa destination amid heightened competition from Mediterranean and international markets.

The forum's discussions also focused on the hotel sector's current situation, development prospects, and the support mechanisms available to operators. It emphasized the need for better alignment between the needs of establishments, available support mechanisms, and the region’s tourism development ambitions. Furthermore, the new classification standards were a central topic, viewed not only as regulatory measures but as crucial levers for enhancing quality, transparency, and trust within the industry. The adoption of these standards by professionals is expected to elevate the service offerings in alignment with international benchmarks and the evolving demands of clientele.

Operational performance and customer experience were pivotal points of reflection, with discussions revolving around energy efficiency, cost management, renovation of spaces and decor, as well as digitalization, artificial intelligence, and modernization of equipment. The overarching goal is to simultaneously enhance service quality, profitability, and the environmental footprint of establishments. The inaugural forum concluded with a commitment to establish a precise agenda for ongoing dialogue among various components of the ecosystem.

Chahili noted that the insights gained from the discussions would contribute to fostering collaboration between industry professionals and their partners, prioritizing the modernization of establishments and ensuring the sustainable positioning of Souss-Massa as one of Morocco's leading tourist destinations.

As a reminder, Agadir has recorded a growth of approximately 4.59% in total arrivals and 6.71% in hotel overnight stays during the first eight months of 2026. Specifically, the total volume of tourist arrivals reached 1.059 million visitors compared to 1.012 million during the same period in 2025, reflecting an increase of 46,484 additional arrivals in classified accommodation establishments. Concurrently, the total number of overnight stays rose significantly to 4.6 million, up from 4.3 million the previous year, marking an increase of 288,851 additional overnight stays. This overall performance is complemented by an improvement in the average length of stay, which increased from 4.25 days in 2025 to 4.34 days in the first eight months of 2026, indicating a greater ability of the destination to retain visitors and enhance its portfolio of activities.
