Agadir to Host the 2026 World Francophonie Scientific Week

Agadir: A Hub for Scientific Diplomacy in 2026

In October 2026, Agadir will proudly host the 6th edition of the World Francophonie Scientific Week (SMFS), organized by Ibn Zohr University in collaboration with the Agence universitaire de la francophonie (AUF). This prestigious international event aims to gather decision-makers and experts to discuss the pivotal role of scientific diplomacy in addressing geopolitical challenges. The central theme for this edition will focus on the involvement of academic institutions in fostering multilateral dialogue.

The SMFS will take place from October 13 to 15, 2026, and is expected to attract a diverse audience, including ministerial representatives, heads of institutions, researchers, and students from various international networks affiliated with AUF. This event continues the tradition of previous editions held in cities such as Bucharest, Cairo, Quebec, Toulouse, and Dakar. Hosting this significant gathering in Agadir marks an important milestone for the university as an institution capable of facilitating multilateral events.

Expanding Academic Collaboration and International Dialogue

The structure of the event is designed to build upon successful past formats, focusing on the governance of higher education systems and research policies in alignment with the strategic directions set forth by AUF and its national partners. The selected topic, "In the Face of Global Geopolitical Challenges: What Role for Francophone Scientific Diplomacy?", directs the discussions towards analyzing the intersections between scientific endeavors and diplomatic efforts.

The anticipated participation of 21,000 individuals over five years, including 900 speakers from 50 countries, underscores the event's importance. The program will feature four main pillars: a ministerial conference focusing on public policies, research forums, a student congress, and workshops aimed at fostering cooperation among participants.

The event organizers are keen to explore the concept of "scientific diplomacy" and its potential to formalize pathways for enhancing the influence of academic networks within the Francophone community. Reports generated from these discussions will inform the strategic orientations of AUF members, ensuring continuity with resolutions made during previous summits.

Under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the organization of SMFS 2026 will also bolster the visibility of the regional academic ecosystem. The selection of Agadir as the host city necessitates the engagement of local services and research facilities at Ibn Zohr University, demonstrating a strong commitment to collaborative and impactful scientific discourse.
