Temporary Closure and Reconstruction Plans for Hassan II Hospital
The Hassan II Regional Hospital in Agadir is set to temporarily close its doors at the end of March 2026 as part of a comprehensive reconstruction plan, which has been allocated a budget of approximately 1.1 billion dirhams. This significant investment was officially approved on March 19 during a meeting presided over by Amine Tehraoui, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, alongside Saïd Amzazi, the regional wali of Souss-Massa. The new facility will feature a four-level structure, accommodating between 415 and 450 beds, enhanced emergency services, and a well-equipped oncology unit.
During the construction phase, patients requiring emergency services, maternity care, and hospital admissions will be redirected to the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir, which was inaugurated in November 2025. Routine consultations are expected to continue at a day clinic set up on the original site of the Hassan II Hospital. However, less clarity has been provided regarding the future of the approximately 1,500 medical and administrative staff members who have been the backbone of the hospital's operations.
This pivotal question about the fate of the hospital staff remains a sensitive and pressing concern. As the reconstruction progresses, the management of the personnel and their roles during this transitional period will be crucial to maintaining the quality of healthcare services in Agadir.
