Transforming Agadir's Coastal Dining Scene

The SDR SMART Tourism initiative has taken a significant step towards enhancing the dining experience along Agadir's picturesque bay. In response to ongoing disparities in the quality of restaurants, the program has launched a call for expressions of interest aimed at modernizing local dining establishments. This strategic initiative not only offers technical and financial support based on a ‘first come, first served’ principle but also seeks to boost the attractiveness and competitiveness of Agadir as a prime destination for tourists, complementing its hospitality sector.

While the tourism outlook for Agadir remains optimistic, with a 4% increase in lodging capacity recorded in 2026 compared to the previous year, the demand for accommodation continues to outpace supply. This imbalance poses a challenge that must be addressed to sustain growth in the coming years. Furthermore, the dining options available to tourists are equally critical, as disparities exist between establishments that align with international standards and those struggling to modernize and meet market demands. Many restaurants lack the necessary resources to upgrade, particularly in the tourist-heavy coastal area, which hosts over 120 dining venues plagued by outdated facilities and service quality issues.

Strategic Support for Local Restaurants

In acknowledging these challenges, the SDR SMART Tourism has initiated a program designed to uplift the dining experience in Agadir's bay area, continuing the momentum from previous projects aimed at improving local offerings. The call for expressions of interest (AMI) is a strategic approach that provides both technical and financial assistance to restaurants, aiming to modernize the commercial interface of this popular tourist zone. Officially launched on May 5, 2026, the application process commenced on May 9 and will conclude on June 15. The program's intent is to identify and pre-select high-potential dining projects that can enhance the area’s culinary landscape.

The AMI emphasizes direct financial support and technical expertise, focusing on projects that aim to elevate dining standards and introduce innovative concepts while integrating entertainment activities that enrich the tourist experience. The local selection commission will evaluate submissions based on predefined criteria, ensuring that selected projects receive both technical assistance and financial incentives, capped by the program's available resources.

This call for interest not only underscores the necessity for modernization within the local restaurant sector but also aims to create a ripple effect of quality enhancement across the board. As Agadir prepares to welcome more visitors in the coming years, the commitment to improving the dining experience will be pivotal in maintaining its status as a leading tourist destination in Morocco.
