Air Transat's Strategic Network Expansion
Air Transat, the Canadian leisure airline, is actively expanding its transatlantic network by introducing four new seasonal routes connecting Canada with Europe, Africa, and beyond. This move not only enhances its long-haul positioning but also strengthens its partnership with Porter Airlines, facilitating greater access to the North American domestic and cross-border markets. As of June 2026, the airline has commenced a direct, non-stop service between Toronto-Pearson and Tirana, Albania's capital. This weekly flight, operated every Thursday until October 8, 2026, utilizes an Airbus A330-200, marking Air Transat as the first and only airline to offer direct flights from North America to Albania.
Additionally, Air Transat has launched three new summer routes from Montréal-Trudeau. These include a route to Dakar, Senegal, which operates up to twice a week using an Airbus A321LR until October 18, 2026, and a flight to Reykjavík, Iceland, also serviced by an Airbus A320 with up to two weekly frequencies until September 20, 2026. Furthermore, since June 12, the airline has begun a weekly non-stop service from Montréal to Agadir, its second Moroccan destination after Marrakech, operating every Friday until October 23, 2026, again utilizing the Airbus A321LR.
A Focused Long-Haul Expansion Strategy
These new routes are part of Air Transat's most comprehensive summer program to date, featuring eight new international routes, the annualization of certain connections, and an increase in frequencies on key routes. The airline emphasizes its strategy of developing "targeted high-value routes," such as Toronto-Tirana and Montréal-Dakar, which establish it as a pioneer in certain markets—being the first to offer direct flights from Canada to Albania and the first direct connection from Canada to Sub-Saharan Africa. The overarching goal is to solidify its position on the transatlantic axis while enhancing its presence in Europe, North Africa, and now West Africa.
This expansion complements several other routes announced for the summer of 2026, including exclusive transatlantic lines from Quebec to Marseille and Ottawa to London-Gatwick, along with a weekly Québec-Nantes route operated from June 2 to October 20, 2026. However, the previously planned Toronto-Accra service to Ghana has been canceled.
Air Transat's strategy is clear: to become a specialist in leisure long-haul travel, with a strengthened network across the North Atlantic and direct access to emerging or niche tourist destinations for the Canadian market. The airline has also restructured its domestic Canadian presence and cross-border routes with the U.S., relying on a strategic partnership with Porter Airlines, which has expanded its North American network while Air Transat focuses on international routes.
Since 2024, Air Transat and Porter Airlines have been marketing combined itineraries, allowing travelers from Canadian hubs like Montréal-Trudeau, Quebec City, and Toronto-Pearson to access a wide range of destinations served by Porter Airlines throughout Canada and to several U.S. cities, including Boston, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Orlando. Meanwhile, Porter Airlines sells Air Transat's long-haul flights departing from these key Canadian locations. This collaboration enables Air Transat to streamline its operations away from the domestic segment while continuing to feed its long-haul flights.
France remains a crucial market for Air Transat, which highlights that it is "the main carrier between Canada and France during the summer," accounting for 25% of available capacity on this transatlantic route. From Montreal, the airline offers multiple daily flights to Paris-CDG, along with seasonal direct services to Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, and Toulouse. Travelers from Quebec benefit from regular direct flights to Paris and a new weekly service to Marseille introduced in May 2026. Toronto is directly connected to Paris with frequencies being increased, complemented by the TGV AIR partnership with SNCF, allowing easy access to numerous French cities from Paris-CDG with a single reservation. Frequencies vary by season.
