Algeria-Morocco Relations: Senate President Condemns Expansionist Ambitions
During the summer university event of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) held in Boumerdès, Algeria, Senate President Azouz Nasri made a strong statement condemning what he described as the "expansionist ambitions" of the Moroccan Makhzen. He reiterated Algeria's unwavering support for the Sahrawi people's resistance against Moroccan occupation, aligning with the nation’s longstanding position on the Western Sahara conflict.
Nasri addressed the attendees of the 14th edition of the summer university for leaders of the SADR and the Polisario Front, under the presidency of Brahim Ghali. He praised the resilience and steadfastness of the Sahrawi people in their struggle for self-determination, emphasizing their legitimate representation by the Polisario Front. He articulated that their resistance deserves global recognition and calls for an international mobilization to counter the Moroccan colonization project in the region.
In his remarks, Nasri stated, "The Sahrawi people's courage in pursuing their legitimate claims deserves international solidarity to thwart the Makhzen's colonial ambitions, which are based on illusory claims that have been rejected by historical evidence and categorically dismissed by the International Court of Justice in its fair and historic ruling." He expressed Algeria's pride in standing alongside the Sahrawi people in their existential struggle.
Algeria's Stance on the Western Sahara Conflict
Furthermore, Nasri highlighted Algeria's commitment to being at the forefront of international diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just resolution to the conflict, one that the Sahrawi people accept voluntarily and in accordance with their will. He firmly rejected any attempts to prolong the conflict through temporary measures or the imposition of unfounded solutions that circumvent international legality, thereby reconfiguring colonialism into a new form of domination.
He underscored that the eradication of colonialism, both in Palestine and Western Sahara, is a collective responsibility and duty, reiterating that the right to self-determination is an inalienable and imprescriptible right. Nasri warned that any complacency towards the occupying state could have detrimental effects on international peace and security.
