Algerian Authorities Bust International Drug Trafficking Network in Oran

On May 7th, the Algerian authorities made a significant breakthrough in the fight against organized crime by arresting 13 individuals linked to an international drug trafficking network in Oran, located in the northwest of the country. During this operation, law enforcement seized an impressive 84 kilograms of cocaine that was destined for Morocco and unspecified European countries. This operation followed an extensive investigation and surveillance that lasted over a month, as reported by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).

The criminal gang, which has been described as a well-organized entity engaged in drug trafficking, was dismantled by the Regional Authority Against Organized Crime in Oran. The DGSN indicated that their operations spanned across North Africa and into Europe, emphasizing the importance of their efforts to disrupt plans to smuggle cocaine across borders. Initial arrests were made when two members of the gang were caught in the act, carrying nearly four kilograms of cocaine concealed within a tourist vehicle.

Following the apprehension of these two suspects, law enforcement successfully captured the remaining 11 members of the criminal organization, who were found with the bulk of the shipment—80 kilograms of cocaine hidden within the mechanical components of a truck. The operation, which was closely monitored by the Public Prosecutor's Office from the outset, resulted in the recovery of 10 vehicles and a motorcycle that were employed in illegal activities, as well as unspecified amounts of euros and Moroccan dirhams.

Once in custody, the arrested individuals were presented to the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the specialized penal center in Oran. They are now set to face judicial proceedings, where they will be charged with various offenses depending on their level of involvement, which will be assessed based on the ongoing investigation, interrogations, and evidence gathered throughout the process.
