Lockheed Martin and Fortem Technologies Showcase Advanced C-UAS Technology at African Lion 26

A representative from Lockheed Martin recently showcased a DJI drone captured using its advanced Sanctum software during the multinational training exercise known as 'African Lion 26', which took place on May 5 in Agadir, Morocco. This demonstration highlighted the integration of a new counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) software with a Fortem Technologies F700 DroneHunter hexacopter, effectively illustrating the growing capabilities of drone interception technology in real-world scenarios.

The exercise included a simulated football game at Stade Adrar, where Lockheed Martin contractors deployed the UAS equipped with their cutting-edge Sanctum software. The operation reached a dramatic climax when a simulated explosion startled the audience, prompting a small DJI UAS to soar over the pitch. The F700, in response, successfully intercepted the UAS with its automated net projectile, demonstrating a sophisticated method of drone capture.

This event was part of a larger training exercise focused on addressing threats related to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) incidents. Notably, the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco collaborated with special forces soldiers from Ghana and Hungary during this exercise. Chief Warrant Officer Bernice Ballayan of the US Marine Corps Reserve supervised the training and expressed satisfaction with the results of the demonstration.

According to a statement from earlier this year, the C-UAS Joint Interagency Task Force 401 had acquired Fortem Technologies' system, which is authorized for drone capture operations within the United States. In a strategic move to enhance security measures ahead of the FIFA World Cup scheduled for June, the US Department of Homeland Security awarded a contract to Fortem Technologies in February.

Lockheed Martin, known for its extensive portfolio of defense systems, has other C-UAS technologies that are currently deployed with various customers globally. Tyler Griffin, Lockheed Martin's C-UAS director, confirmed on May 7 that while the company maintains active systems, he refrained from disclosing specific countries utilizing these technologies. Both Fortem Technologies and Lockheed Martin adapted their systems for this demonstration, showcasing the versatility and performance enhancements of their respective technologies.
