Allan Okello's High-Profile Move to AS FAR Rabat
In a significant development in the African football landscape, Uganda Cranes midfielder Allan Okello has officially completed his transfer to Moroccan football club AS FAR Rabat from Young Africans SC (Yanga) for a reported fee of approximately KShs 194 million (around $1.5 million). This move marks a pivotal moment in Okello's career, coming just seven months after his arrival at Yanga from the Ugandan team Vipers SC, where he had been acquired for nearly $300,000 (about KShs 38.84 million). The swift transition from Yanga to AS FAR Rabat not only highlights Okello's rising profile in the sport but also reflects the impressive return on investment for Yanga, who have effectively quintupled their initial outlay on the player.
Okello's Impressive Performance and Future Prospects
During his brief spell at Yanga, Okello showcased remarkable talent, finishing as the club's top scorer with 14 league goals and providing eight assists across 23 matches. His contributions were vital in helping Yanga clinch the NBC Premier League title, solidifying his status as a key player in the squad. Although Moroccan rivals Wydad Casablanca expressed interest and proposed a bid of $700,000, it was AS FAR Rabat that ultimately met Yanga's valuation of $1 million, leading to the successful completion of the transfer.
At AS FAR Rabat, Okello reunites with his former coach Pedro Gonçalves, under whose guidance he previously won a league title at Yanga. This reunion is anticipated to play a crucial role in Okello's adaptation to Moroccan football, especially following a less successful tenure in Algeria with Paradou AC from 2020 to 2023. Yanga, in response to Okello's departure, has already taken steps to fill the void by re-signing Burkinabe midfielder Stéphane Aziz Ki, who returns to the club after a stint with Libyan side Al Ittihad Tripoli. The president of Yanga, Hersi Said, acknowledged Okello's impactful time at the club and left the door open for a possible future return to Dar es Salaam.
