Astronomical Predictions Indicate Tomorrow Marks the Start of the New Hijri Year

Astronomical Predictions for the New Hijri Year

According to the Egyptian Institute of Astronomy, tomorrow, June 16, 2026, is expected to be the first day of the new Hijri year 1448 based on astronomical calculations. The Institute announced that the crescent moon for the month of Muharram 1448 will be born shortly after the conjunction occurs at 5:56 AM Cairo local time on June 15, 2026, corresponding to the 29th of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447.

The Institute further explained that the new crescent will remain visible in the sky over Mecca for approximately 40 minutes after sunset on the day of sighting. In other Arab and Islamic capitals and cities, the crescent moon will remain visible for periods ranging from 15 to 56 minutes after sunset. In Tunisia, the process of moon sighting for the month of Muharram will take place after sunset today, and the official announcement regarding the date of the Hijri New Year will be made by the Grand Mufti of the Republic.

The government has announced that in celebration of the Hijri New Year, state employees, local communities, and public institutions will enjoy a one-day holiday, which will either fall on Tuesday, June 16, or Wednesday, June 17, 2026, depending on the sighting of the moon as confirmed by the announcement from the Grand Mufti of Tunisia.
