Ayoub Bouaddi's Dilemma: National Team Choice Ahead of World Cup
Emerging as a prominent midfielder for Lille in the French league, 18-year-old Ayoub Bouaddi has yet to make a definitive choice regarding which national team he will represent, either Morocco or France. Bouaddi has showcased his exceptional talent, participating in various age categories for the French national team, including the U21 squad. However, with the World Cup approaching, Morocco has intensified its efforts to secure players of Moroccan descent who have dual citizenship and have been raised or trained in Europe.
In a recent interview with Ligue 1 Plus, following Lille's victory over Rennes, Bouaddi stated, "Let's see, I haven't decided yet," leaving the door open for either national team. The Moroccan Football Federation, along with the new national coach, Mohamed Wahbi, has reportedly ramped up their efforts to persuade Bouaddi to join the Moroccan team.
As Morocco prepares for friendly matches against Ecuador and Paraguay on March 27 and 31, respectively, there are speculations that Bouaddi might receive a call-up to participate in these fixtures. The Moroccan team, known as the Atlas Lions, is set to compete in Group C at the upcoming World Cup alongside Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland.
Bouaddi made his mark after joining Lille Academy in 2021, becoming the youngest player to debut for the first team in the UEFA Europa Conference League against KÍ Klaksvik from the Faroe Islands, just three days after celebrating his sixteenth birthday. His skills continued to shine as he made his Champions League debut against Real Madrid on his seventeenth birthday, solidifying his reputation as a comprehensive midfielder with outstanding technical ability.
