Belgian Competitors Make Their Mark at the Morocco Desert Challenge

The Morocco Desert Challenge has kicked off with a thrilling start for Belgian competitors, showcasing their skills in a series of grueling races across challenging terrains. Joris Van Dyck made a remarkable impression in the motorcycle category, finishing in an impressive second place, just 1 minute and 14 seconds behind French rider Julien Dalbec, who rides for KTM. Meanwhile, Thijs Cools, also on a KTM, secured the sixteenth position, finishing 9 minutes and 17 seconds behind the leader, demonstrating the high level of competition present in the event.

In the automotive category, Dutch driver Mitchel van den Brink, piloting a Toyota Hilux, lived up to expectations as the favorite, leading the way ahead of his compatriot Rients Hofstra. The Belgian duo of Vincent Thijs and his co-driver Tom De Leeuw also performed admirably, clinching third place with a time that was 2 minutes and 36 seconds off the pace. The performance of the Belgian team continued with Raf and Kris Van der Steen in eleventh place, followed closely by Vincent Vroninks and Dave Berghmans in twelfth, and Jos Bijnens with Johny Vekemans finishing thirteenth, all contributing to a strong showing for Belgium in the competition.

In the SSV class, Portuguese racer Paulo Rodrigues took the top spot, while Jan Van der Vaet, co-driving for Rene Van Eerd, became the first Belgian to cross the finish line, securing a commendable tenth place. The truck category saw Martin van den Brink, also driving an Iveco, mirror the success of his son in the automotive division, further highlighting the diverse talent present at this year's challenge.

The excitement continues as the second stage of the Morocco Desert Challenge is set to unfold on Saturday, covering a distance of 300 kilometers between Foum Zguid and M'Hamid, promising more thrilling action for competitors and fans alike.
