Bengida: The Goal-Scoring Machine of FUS Rabat Targeting Historical Records

Bengida's Rise to Prominence in Moroccan Football

Upon returning to the Moroccan Professional League after a stint in the Belgian league, Sofiane Bengida never anticipated that his prowess on the field would outshine even his notable performances with his previous team, Raja Casablanca. As the league progressed, Bengida, now 24 years old, quickly established himself as a formidable force among the league's strikers. His recent match against RS Berkane was yet another testament to his scoring abilities as he netted his 13th goal of the season, placing him at the top of the league's scoring chart.

Before venturing into European football, Bengida was viewed as a promising talent within Raja Casablanca, a perspective that ultimately facilitated his transfer to Standard Liège in the summer of 2023. However, the disparity between the Moroccan and Belgian leagues proved challenging, leading to a loan move to Racing Mechelen in early 2025 after just three months in Liège.

These setbacks, rather than discouraging him, served as valuable lessons. Bengida adopted a mindset of "taking a step back to leap two steps forward," which motivated his return to the Moroccan league, believing that FUS Rabat would provide the ideal environment for refining his skills.

Aiming for Greatness: Breaking Records

This season, Bengida has seamlessly taken charge of the FUS Rabat front line, translating numerous attacking opportunities into goals. With 13 goals scored in just 14 league matches, he maintains an impressive average of nearly one goal per game, surpassing his previous scoring rates before 2023. Notably, this tally has historically been sufficient for players to win the Golden Boot in an entire season.

Bengida's experience in Belgium has undoubtedly enriched his gameplay, allowing him to integrate high-level techniques and habits that have positively impacted his performance since returning to Moroccan football. He now harbors ambitions of breaking the longstanding record for the most goals scored in a single Professional League season, currently held by Moroccan legend Mohamed Bousati, who scored 25 goals in 1982.

Should Bengida continue on his current trajectory, he may not only secure the scoring title but also capture the attention of the national team coach, Mohammed Wabi, as a potential candidate for the Moroccan squad participating in the upcoming World Cup 2026.
