Benin's Strong Stance on Moroccan Sovereignty
On July 21, 2026, the Republic of Benin reiterated its unwavering support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over all its territories, including the Sahara region. This declaration was made during the joint communiqué that concluded the seventh session of the Moroccan-Beninese Joint Cooperation Committee, held in Cotonou. The meeting was co-chaired by Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, alongside Corine Amori Bruni, Benin's Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for the integration of people of African descent.
Support for the Autonomy Initiative
During the discussions, Benin reaffirmed its backing for Morocco's autonomy initiative, describing it as the only credible and realistic solution for resolving the ongoing dispute. The Beninese minister praised the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which endorses Morocco's autonomy plan as a basis for a fair, lasting, and acceptable resolution to the conflict for all parties involved. Furthermore, she expressed the intention to undertake a visit to the city of Dakhla in the near future, with the aim of witnessing the significant economic and social advancements in the region and exploring opportunities for establishing partnerships on-site. The two sides also agreed to hold the next session of the Joint Cooperation Committee in Dakhla, further solidifying their collaborative efforts.
