Benkirane Addresses Tensions Surrounding Religious Practices in Marrakech

Benkirane's Take on Tensions over Religious Practices

Abdelilah Benkirane, the former Prime Minister of Morocco, has publicly expressed his views regarding the recent incident of Jewish prayers held outside the Bab Doukkala gate in Marrakech. He emphasized that the core issue is not about the freedom to practice religious rituals, but rather the provocative nature and context of such actions. He stated, 'The problem is not whether these individuals pray or not, but the provocative character that this behavior entails,' highlighting that such practices stir sensitivities among Moroccans and evoke images of the ongoing situation in Al-Quds.

During a communication meeting with the residents of Sbat Jzoula in the Safi region on Sunday, April 26, Benkirane reiterated that this behavior was 'inappropriate and should not have been allowed in such a manner.' He called for respecting societal particularities and avoiding actions that could incite tension or open the door to discord. He stressed that maintaining general harmony requires a wise approach to such incidents.

Reflections on National Stability and Challenges

Benkirane also underscored the necessity of identifying the authorities that permitted the religious gathering in front of the historic wall, warning of the repercussions of such events and emphasizing the 'need to assign responsibilities' in this context. On another note, he acknowledged that despite various challenges and issues facing Morocco, the nation remains in a better position compared to many countries that have lost basic living conditions. He asserted, 'We can say that, despite everything, our country is doing well; it enjoys security and stability and offers job opportunities for those willing to work. Yes, there are difficulties, corruption, unemployment, and problems in education and health, but overall, we are in good shape.'

Furthermore, he highlighted that security is a fundamental prerequisite for a dignified life, explaining, 'If there is no security, one cannot enjoy life, fulfill obligations, or establish a family with peace of mind.' He emphasized that the stability of Morocco is built on the bonds of brotherhood among its citizens, adding, 'We are brothers because we are Muslims, and brothers because we are Moroccans, regardless of our diverse origins and affiliations, and this is what preserves the cohesion of this country.'

Benkirane defended the reforms implemented by his government, particularly regarding pension system reforms, explaining, 'Yes, we raised the retirement age by three years, but had we not done so, you would find nothing to receive after 2023.' He added, 'The reforms we enacted are what allowed for the continued disbursement of pensions, a fact confirmed by specialists.' He also discussed the reform of the compensation fund, stating, 'The funds that were being disbursed were taken without real oversight, which is why we reformed this system to prevent the depletion of public money.' He strongly criticized what he termed lies and deception from his political opponents, asserting, 'Some propagate falsehoods and distort facts, but if our policies were not successful, citizens would not have entrusted us with their confidence again.'

In a direct message to the youth, Benkirane urged them not to wait for opportunities without putting in effort, affirming that attaining responsibility requires struggle, sacrifice, and continuous giving. He noted that political work is not a privilege granted but a responsibility earned through commitment and hard work, adding that experience has shown that those who persevere and remain patient ultimately succeed. He concluded by asserting that the future of the country lies in the hands of its citizens, calling for conscious participation in upcoming electoral processes, emphasizing that choices should be based on competence and integrity rather than slogans or temptations. He insisted that the forthcoming phase necessitates greater awareness and responsibility, as 'real reform begins with the will and choices of the people.'
