Violence Erupts at Patong Cafe Involving Tourists
In a troubling incident that took place early this morning on September 7, a Moroccan tourist and a Saudi Arabian tourist sustained injuries following a confrontation at a cafe in Patong, according to reports from local authorities. The altercation unfolded at approximately 5:30 AM at Cafe Dubai Phuket, a rooftop lounge located above the well-known Sugar Club on Bangla Road.
The individuals involved have been identified as Mourad Abid, a national of Morocco, and Alqahtani Omar Mohammed A, a Saudi Arabian national. Initial investigations reveal that the Saudi tourist was heavily intoxicated when a Moroccan bystander attempted to persuade him to leave the premises. This led to a physical confrontation when the Saudi allegedly kicked the Moroccan man in the leg. As the two moved to the ground floor, tensions escalated, and the Saudi tourist reportedly hurled insults at the Moroccan, prompting him to retaliate by punching the Saudi in the face, resulting in injury.
Staff at the cafe promptly contacted the Patong Police, who arrived on the scene to assess the situation. Both individuals were subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Patong Police Station for further questioning and documentation of the incident. They were also sent to Patong Hospital for medical examination and treatment of their injuries. Authorities confirmed that they are reviewing CCTV footage from the cafe to gather evidence that will clarify the circumstances leading to this unfortunate altercation.
The investigation is currently being led by Pol Lt Sakwanat Damchaom, Deputy Inspector of the Investigation Division at Patong Police Station, with oversight from the station's dedicated investigation unit.
