British Widow Sues Marrakech Hotel Over Husband's Tragic Death in Spa Fire

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the widow of a British man who tragically lost his life in a fire at a luxury hotel spa in Marrakech is taking legal action against the establishment. Rachel Barnes, the widow of 48-year-old Anthony Barnes from Cambridgeshire, has filed a lawsuit in England seeking over £500,000 in damages from the Hotel Des Idrissides, which operates the Jaal Ryad Resort where the incident occurred. This legal battle centers around claims of negligence and inadequate safety measures that allegedly contributed to the fire that claimed her husband's life.

The incident took place in March 2023 while Anthony was on a business trip with colleagues. As he was receiving a massage at the spa, a fire broke out, resulting in his untimely death and the loss of another hotel employee. Rachel Barnes asserts that the hotel failed to maintain proper safety protocols and that critical equipment such as smoke detectors and emergency lighting were either absent or malfunctioning.

Rachel's attorney has brought forth alarming details, asserting that the absence of a smoke detector in the massage room, along with insufficient emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and poor communication regarding the emergency, directly led to the tragedy. The allegations highlight not just a lack of preparedness but also a failure to prioritize guest safety in the establishment's operations.

In response to these accusations, the hotel's legal representation has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. They contend that the fire originated in the sauna and that hotel staff acted promptly by alerting emergency services and attempting to extinguish the flames while evacuating guests. Furthermore, they maintain that the hotel was compliant with Moroccan regulations regarding safety and that the premises were equipped with functional fire alarms, emergency lighting, and multiple fire extinguishers.

An earlier investigation conducted in the UK concluded that Anthony Barnes's death was accidental. The thick smoke that engulfed the spa severely hampered visibility and rescue efforts. As the case unfolds, no hearing date has yet been set, leaving the family in a state of uncertainty as they seek justice for their loss.
