CAF Accepts Morocco's Appeal on AFCON Final Sanctions
In a significant development concerning the disciplinary proceedings related to the events that transpired during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially accepted the appeal filed by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. This decision opens the door for a re-evaluation of the case by CAF's disciplinary bodies, inviting a fresh examination of the circumstances surrounding the controversial match.
The acceptance of Morocco's appeal means that a new hearing will be convened before the CAF Disciplinary Committee, allowing all parties involved the opportunity to present their arguments and submit additional evidence that could potentially influence the outcome of the disciplinary measures initially imposed.
Back in late January, CAF had announced a series of sanctions stemming from the events that occurred during the match held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The penalties sparked widespread reactions, with many observers arguing that the sanctions appeared disproportionately heavy between the two competing national teams.
Among the sanctions was a five-match suspension for Senegalese coach Aliou Cissé, along with a hefty fine of $100,000, after he directed his players to leave the pitch prematurely. Furthermore, Senegalese players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr were each handed two-match suspensions for what was deemed unsportsmanlike behavior towards the referee.
Moreover, the Senegalese Football Federation faced a total of $615,000 in fines due to the misconduct of certain fans and members of the technical staff during the match. This situation has led to a broader discussion regarding the need for fair and balanced disciplinary practices within the realm of African football.
