CAF Strips Senegal of AFCON Title, Declares Morocco Champions

CAF's Controversial Decision on AFCON Title

In a surprising turn of events, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that Senegal has been stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, which they secured in a tumultuous final just two months ago. The governing body of African football declared Morocco the new champions following a ruling by its appeals board. The decision, made public on Tuesday, states that Senegal has officially forfeited the January 18 match, which they had initially won 1-0, with the result now recorded as 3-0 in favor of Morocco, the host nation.

The final took place in Rabat, where tensions flared as Senegal's players, led by their coach Pape Thiaw, walked off the pitch in protest against a controversial penalty awarded to Morocco late in the game. After a delay of approximately 15 minutes, during which emotions ran high, play resumed, but Morocco's Brahim Diaz saw his penalty saved. In a dramatic twist, Pape Gueye later scored a goal in extra time, clinching the championship for Senegal amidst chaos.

This final was marked by numerous disturbances, including supporters attempting to invade the field, skirmishes between players on the sidelines, and confrontations between media representatives from the two nations. A particularly strange incident involved Moroccan ball boys trying to snatch a towel from Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in what appeared to be an attempt to distract him during the critical moments of the match.

Earlier in January, CAF had already taken disciplinary action by imposing fines exceeding $1 million and suspending players and officials from both Senegal and Morocco. However, at that time, the match result remained unchanged. The situation may escalate further, as there are indications that a subsequent appeal could be made to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
