Cardinal Cristobal Lopez Romero Steps Back Following Sexual Abuse Allegations
In a significant development within the Catholic Church in Morocco, Cardinal Cristobal Lopez Romero, the Archbishop of Rabat, has stepped back from his duties while awaiting the results of a Vatican investigation concerning allegations of sexual abuse against him. In light of recent events, he has also announced his resignation, stating it will take effect "no later than May 2027." This announcement comes alongside the appointment of Archbishop coadjutor Mario León Dorado, a decision made by Pope Leo XIV, aimed at supporting the archbishop during this tumultuous period.

Archbishop of Rabat to Resign in 2027
In his statement, Cardinal Lopez Romero clarified that the appointment of Mario León Dorado, who has been serving as the apostolic administrator since early August, is a fulfillment of a request he made to the late Pope Francis and then to Pope Leo. He confirmed that Dorado will serve as his successor upon the acceptance of his resignation, which he is required to submit by the time he reaches the age of 75 in May 2027, marking a transitional moment for the Archdiocese as it prepares for its sixth titular archbishop.
Regarding the ongoing investigation, Lopez Romero stated, "I remain waiting to be heard by the Dicastery for Evangelization, under which our diocese falls, so that I can explain myself in the investigation that concerns me, which is why I had withdrawn from diocesan life." The inquiry began after accusations of sexual violence were reported by several women against him, leading to his decision to step back to avoid hindering the investigation.
Allegations emerged in early July from five female parishioners who accused the cardinal of various forms of sexual misconduct. According to reports from AFP, testimonies included accounts of repeated sexual assaults and inappropriate physical gestures, such as prolonged and forceful embraces, as well as an attempted kiss. At least three additional women have also leveled similar accusations against the cardinal.
In a previous statement, Cristobal Lopez Romero indicated that he was taking a step back to ensure that the investigation could proceed without interference. He acknowledged the challenges posed by this situation and the legitimate questions arising from it. Nonetheless, he firmly stated that he has not committed any act of aggression, violence, or sexual harassment.
