Casablanca Airport's Ambitious New Terminal Set for Completion Before 2030 World Cup

Transformative Developments at Mohammed V Airport

In a significant development for Morocco’s infrastructure, a consortium of architects led by the UK-based RSHP, in collaboration with France's Egis and ALA Architects, is set to design a state-of-the-art terminal at Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport. This ambitious project aims to elevate the airport's capacity to accommodate an impressive 20 million passengers annually, all in preparation for the highly anticipated 2030 FIFA World Cup. The estimated cost for this monumental undertaking is projected at around $3 billion (approximately 12 billion Dirhams), highlighting the scale and importance of the initiative.

Innovative Design and Features

The new terminal, designed in the form of an H, will span three stories and employ modular construction techniques to ensure it meets its completion deadline of 2029. Among the upgrades included in this comprehensive renovation are a new 3.7-kilometer runway, enhanced taxiways, and a modern control tower, all aimed at optimizing the airport's operational efficiency. The design of the terminal's roof draws inspiration from the dynamic waves of the Atlantic Ocean, reflecting the coastal charm of Casablanca.

Additionally, a high-speed rail link will facilitate seamless connectivity between the airport and major cities, further enhancing accessibility for travelers. The terminal will feature green spaces, retail outlets, exclusive lounges, and a premium hotel, creating a holistic travel experience that caters to diverse needs.

Upon the awarding of the construction contract to a joint venture of Morocco's leading contractors, SGTM and TGCC, preparatory work commenced in July 2025. Ivan Harbour, RSHP’s senior design director, emphasized the vision of the airport as a space that celebrates light and warmth, offering travelers a unique and memorable experience. This design philosophy aims to capture the essence of Casablanca while creating an inviting threshold for visitors arriving from around the globe.

As the world eagerly awaits the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, the new terminal is poised to play a pivotal role in redefining Morocco’s international presence and enhancing its tourism potential.
