Price Trends in Casablanca's Wholesale Market

The weekly food price report for Casablanca's wholesale market, released by Casa Prestations, reveals a significant decrease in tomato prices and several other vegetables, alongside an upward trend in certain fruits and a notable recovery in red meat prices, particularly in the ovine category.

As of March 4, the wholesale price for tomatoes has dropped from 3.00 to 2.50 dirhams per kilogram, with the maximum price decreasing from 6.00 to 4.50 dirhams per kilogram. In contrast, the prices for carrots remain steady, ranging between 3.00 and 5.50 dirhams per kilogram. Similarly, fresh onions have held their ground at 2.50-5.00 dirhams per kilogram.

On the other hand, potato prices have increased, with the lower price threshold rising from 2.50 to 3.00 dirhams per kilogram and the upper limit moving up from 4.50 to 5.50 dirhams per kilogram. However, cauliflower and white cabbage prices remain stable, ranging from 1.00 to 2.00 dirhams per kilogram and 1.20-2.00 dirhams per kilogram, respectively. Zucchini prices have slightly adjusted at the top end, dropping from 8.00 to 7.00 dirhams per kilogram, while maintaining a consistent entry price of 5.00 dirhams per kilogram.

Similarly, cucumber prices have seen a dip in the lower range, falling from 7.00 to 6.00 dirhams per kilogram, with an upper limit fixed at 9.00 dirhams per kilogram. Conversely, eggplant prices have strengthened at the entry level, increasing from 3.00 to 3.50 dirhams per kilogram, though the upper price has decreased from 7.00 to 6.00 dirhams per kilogram. Squash, however, has remained unchanged, staying at 2.50-7.00 dirhams per kilogram.

Contrasting Trends in Fruits and Red Meat

In the fruit segment, avocado prices have slightly adjusted at the high end, decreasing from 34.00 to 30.00 dirhams per kilogram, while maintaining a steady entry price of 20.00 dirhams per kilogram. Imported mangoes and pineapples have shown stability, priced at 15.00-33.00 dirhams per kilogram and 15.00-20.00 dirhams per kilogram, respectively. Imported bananas have remained consistent at 12.00-18.00 dirhams per kilogram, while local bananas have seen an increase at the upper end, climbing from 11.00 to 12.00 dirhams per kilogram, with a steady lower threshold of 7.00 dirhams per kilogram.

Orange prices have also shown an uptick at the upper limit, moving from 4.20 to 5.00 dirhams per kilogram, while the entry price remains stable at 2.50 dirhams per kilogram. Local apple prices have increased at both ends, moving from 7.00-13.00 dirhams per kilogram to 8.00-14.00 dirhams per kilogram, whereas imported apples have stayed fixed at 12.00-23.00 dirhams per kilogram. Clementines have displayed upward pressure, rising from 2.50-6.00 dirhams per kilogram to 5.00-8.00 dirhams per kilogram, while strawberries have held steady at 12.00-19.00 dirhams.

Regarding red meats, beef has seen a slight decrease, with entry prices dropping from 78.00 to 75.00 dirhams per kilogram, and the maximum price contracting from 95.00 to 94.00 dirhams. In contrast, the price of ovine meat is on the rise, with the lower threshold climbing from 110.00 to 115.00 dirhams per kilogram and the upper limit increasing from 115.00 to 118.00 dirhams per kilogram.
