Celebrating the Launch of 'Voices of the Medina'
On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, the historic Riyad Dar Al-Sharifa in the old city of Marrakech will host a special event for the presentation and signing of the new poetry collection titled Voices of the Medina by Italian poet Anna Maria Gallo. This event is part of the venue's cultural and artistic program and is set to begin at six in the evening.
The collection invites readers on a journey filled with emotions, memories, imagery, and contemplations about existence and the quest for self-discovery within the enchanting alleys of Marrakech and beyond. This poetic work takes the form of poetic diaries that revive memories of encounters and experiences, presenting a sensory journey imbued with the scents of spices and the aromas of distant lands.
A Journey of Exploration and Connection
Anna Maria Gallo's journey in Morocco commenced in 1994 when she arrived as a young tourist. Over the years, her affection for Marrakech and Morocco deepened, leading her to explore the rich and ancient culture of the region, as well as its hospitality and spirit of life-sharing. Her exploration has spanned over 32 years, allowing her to connect profoundly with the local culture.
The event will include readings of several poems and an open discussion about the circumstances surrounding the creation of the collection, as well as its development and structure. Gallo's poetry delves into universal human themes such as friendship, love, and memory, while also recalling her travels through Amazigh villages and the vast deserts.
The collection offers a poetic experience characterized by simple yet profound and evocative language, giving Anna Maria Gallo the ability to voice shared personal and human emotions, transforming her experiences and feelings into verses that resonate directly with the reader.
Additionally, the collection engages in a dialogue with the artwork of Moroccan artist Mohamed Najahi, who has contributed several pieces that accompany the book, with one of his artworks adorning its cover. The event will also feature the opening of an exhibition showcasing Najahi's artistic creations in the same location.
Participating in the event will be art critic Dr. Boujemaa Al-Aoufi, poet and journalist Dr. Mustafa Ghalman, alongside artist Mohamed Najahi, with musical interludes provided by artist Aziz Abla playing selections on the oud.
Attendees are expected to include the Consul General of Italy in Casablanca, members of the Italian diplomatic corps, as well as numerous cultural figures, artists, and interested individuals.
