Celebrating Moroccan Artistry: Safaa Erruas and M’barek Bouhchichi at the Dakar Biennale

Two Moroccan Artists Shine at the 16th Dakar Biennale

Morocco is set to make a significant impact at the upcoming 16th Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art, with two of its talented artists, Safaa Erruas and M’barek Bouhchichi, proudly representing the nation. This esteemed event, themed “(Anti)fragility: Arts of Repair and Strategies of Backlash,” will take place from November 19 to December 19, 2026, under the artistic direction of Morad Montazami. The participation of these artists not only highlights their individual contributions to the contemporary art scene but also underscores Morocco's vibrant cultural landscape.

Safaa Erruas, born in 1976 in Tetouan, has crafted a unique artistic journey that revolves around the themes of whiteness, fragility, and materiality. A graduate of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan in 1998, Erruas skillfully intertwines various materials such as paper, needles, pins, razor blades, and fibers in her creations. Her works are characterized by a delicate balance between fragility and tension, inviting viewers to explore the expressive potential of contrasting elements. Currently based in Tetouan, her installations and paper works push the boundaries of materiality, engaging audiences in a dialogue about vulnerability and strength.

M’barek Bouhchichi, who hails from Akka and was born in 1975, focuses on the representation of the Black body within his artistic practice. Through an array of mediums, including sculpture, drawing, painting, and installation, Bouhchichi delves into the complex identities, memories, and narratives that shape Moroccan society. His art often features hands, faces, and other symbolic fragments, serving as vehicles for reflection on visibility, cultural heritage, and the transmission of identity. Bouhchichi currently resides in Tahannaout, Morocco, where he continues to develop his thought-provoking body of work.

The Dakar Biennale not only serves as a platform for artists to showcase their creations but also fosters cross-cultural dialogue and exchange among African nations. The participation of Erruas and Bouhchichi exemplifies the rich artistic heritage of Morocco and its commitment to contributing to the broader African artistic narrative. As these artists gear up for their presentations in Dakar, the anticipation builds around how their works will resonate with local and international audiences, further solidifying Morocco's position on the global art stage.
