Governor of Marrakech-Safi Region Highlights Development Projects on National Migrant Day
On August 10, 2026, Governor Khalid Al-Habeel presided over an informative meeting at the Regional Headquarters of Marrakech-Safi, commemorating National Migrant Day. The event, attended by prominent figures including Mohammed Al-Idrisi, Vice President of Marrakech's municipal council, was themed "Moroccans Abroad in Service of Morocco 2030 Projects." This gathering brought together numerous members of the Moroccan diaspora, external service heads, elected officials, as well as civil and military personalities, to showcase various developmental projects aimed at modernizing the city’s infrastructure, promoting investment, and creating job opportunities, thereby enhancing Marrakech's role as an economic and developmental hub within the region and across the kingdom.
During the meeting, particular emphasis was placed on the role of Moroccans living abroad in supporting the dynamic developmental momentum currently underway in the kingdom, especially in light of upcoming international events, notably the 2030 World Cup, which poses a significant organizational challenge for Morocco. Al-Habeel highlighted the royal attention and care that King Mohammed VI extends to Moroccan expatriates, asserting that hosting the World Cup represents a national project that necessitates the involvement of various stakeholders, including the Moroccan diaspora. This calls for bolstering human investment among expatriates to adapt to developmental changes and enhance spatial justice.
The governor presented a series of initiatives related to the enhancement of Marrakech and its appeal. Key projects include the rehabilitation of the Grand Stadium of Marrakech, focusing on modernizing its facilities and equipment, improving access and lighting systems to meet the requirements for hosting major sporting events. Additionally, there are plans to upgrade Marrakech Menara International Airport, enhancing its services through digitization and the concept of a "smart airport," as well as developing railway connections to improve Marrakech's position within the high-speed train network, including the establishment of a station in the Al-Izdihar area.
Mohammed Al-Idrisi, in a special statement to Niche Now, called for the enhancement of economic and social investment to match the achievements in the sports sector. He emphasized the municipality's commitment to improving services at its facilities, modernizing the city’s infrastructure, and contributing to significant structured projects while ensuring their implementation on the ground. This includes enhancing road networks, street lighting, creating green spaces, updating urban transport fleets to bolster the city’s appeal as a premier tourist destination, streamlining administrative processes, reducing financial costs, and leveraging digital transformation to accelerate administrative services and project licensing, thereby improving the business climate and establishing a robust economic attractiveness grounded in social justice and transparency mechanisms.
This meeting took place as part of the celebration of National Migrant Day, which occurs annually on August 10, aimed at strengthening the bonds between Moroccans abroad and their homeland. It serves as an opportunity to reflect on the significant achievements and aspirations of this community, especially amidst the economic, social, and political transformations and challenges the country is facing.
