Ceuta President Calls for Immediate Repatriation of Minors to Morocco

Ceuta's President Advocates for Timely Return of Minors to Morocco

The President of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, representing the Popular Party (PP), has made a fervent appeal on Monday for the necessary measures to be implemented for the "immediate return" of approximately 3,300 minors currently residing in Ceuta, citing the situation as "unsustainable" not only for the local reception system but also for the country as a whole. Vivas emphasized that the current state of affairs is untenable, with the number of minor refugees potentially increasing to 4,000, given that only 160 cases have been processed so far.

In statements made to the press, Vivas expressed his concerns regarding the growing number of minors in Ceuta, asserting that it is imperative to mobilize both material and human resources to address this challenge. He articulated that the return to Morocco is the most viable solution to prevent future influxes that could overwhelm not just Ceuta but other regions in Spain as well. "It is essential to act responsibly in this matter," he stated, underscoring the need for immediate action.

Vivas made it clear that the Spanish Government should actively request Morocco's cooperation in facilitating these repatriations, ideally with the support of the European Union. He pointed out that if Morocco declines to cooperate, it would reflect a lack of willingness from the EU to assist, especially considering the alarming increase in the number of minors from just 180 at the end of July to the current figure of 3,300, highlighting the inadequacy of current measures.

Furthermore, he reiterated that this approach to repatriation should be pursued to prevent future invasions and to ensure that individuals are not exploited for political purposes. Vivas remarked on the tragic consequences of past invasions, where three minors lost their lives, and stressed that such actions should not be seen as a pathway to residency in Spain.

In conclusion, Vivas emphasized that the responsibility for the repatriation of these minors lies with the national government and should not be offloaded onto Ceuta. He criticized the tendency to blame Ceuta for the influx of minors, asserting that the situation stems from a national invasion that should have been prevented by the government. He defended his administration's proactive measures, noting the establishment of up to eleven resources for the care of these minors.
