Investigation into Moroccan Movements: Ceuta's Crisis Under Scrutiny

Ceuta's Crisis Investigation Expands with New Witnesses Called to Testify

In a significant development concerning the mass entry of migrants into Ceuta, Spain, on July 30 and 31, Judge María Tardón from the National Court has broadened her investigation. The inquiry now focuses on identifying a Civil Guard informant who reportedly warned authorities about unusual movements in Morocco just prior to the crisis. As part of this inquiry, the judge is demanding new intelligence reports from the military, surveillance recordings from the border systems, and documentation regarding the warnings and decisions made by authorities in the lead-up to the crisis.

On October 16, the judge issued an order to summon three key government advisors from Ceuta for questioning on October 27. These advisors—Alberto Ramón Gaitán, Nabila Benzina, and Alejandro Ramírez—were identified by Ceuta's President Juan Jesús Vivas as having been present in the affected areas or having played active roles in managing the crisis. The following day, three police officers who were on duty at the border during the July events will also be called to testify, along with the chief inspector of the National Police and the lieutenant colonel of the Civil Guard who was in charge of operations in Ceuta, both of whom are scheduled to appear on October 26.

This heightened scrutiny comes in light of the massive influx of migrants, which has sparked significant political and social discussion not just in Ceuta but across Spain. Authorities are now under pressure to provide clarity on the events that transpired and the preparedness of the response to such a sudden crisis. As the investigation unfolds, it is expected that more details will emerge regarding the communication and actions taken by government and military officials during this pivotal moment.
