Ceuta's Mayor Calls for Morocco to Assume Responsibility for Child Migrants
In a recent statement, the Mayor of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, has openly criticized Morocco regarding the repatriation of unaccompanied minors who arrived in the city during a significant influx at the end of July. Vivas emphasized that it is Morocco's responsibility to care for these children, stating that if the country is capable of signing trade agreements and participating in organizing the World Cup, it should also be able to take care of its children. His remarks came during a public appearance alongside Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain's Popular Party.
Vivas proposed that these minors should be reintegrated into their families in Morocco. If this is not feasible, he suggested that Moroccan social services and welfare organizations should take responsibility for them. Both Vivas and Feijóo have insisted on the need to return all individuals who entered Ceuta illegally, including minors, back to Morocco. This stance aligns with the measures being considered by the Spanish central government in Madrid, which aims to alleviate pressure on the reception centers for minors in Ceuta. This includes the possibility of transferring a number of these minors to the Iberian Peninsula, where regional authorities have committed to providing care for them.
Furthermore, Morocco has already underscored the urgency of expediting the repatriation of Moroccan minors who entered Ceuta during the mass crossings on July 30 and 31. The Spanish Foreign Minister had previously praised Morocco's position on this matter, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the two nations in addressing the challenges posed by migration.
