Chile's Recognition of Morocco's Sovereignty
In a significant diplomatic development, Chile has officially recognized the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the contentious Sahara region. This affirmation was articulated in a joint communiqué that followed a meeting held in New York on September 21, 2026, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The discussions involved Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his Chilean counterpart, Francisco Pérez Mackenna, with the presence of Chile's President, José Antonio Kast.
Bilateral Actions and Economic Cooperation
The joint statement highlighted Chile's commitment to translating its support into tangible bilateral actions, specifically by promoting economic and trade cooperation opportunities within the Moroccan Sahara region. This initiative aims to bolster investments, enhance trade relations, and foster productive development in the area. Additionally, Chile expressed its endorsement of Security Council Resolution 2797/2025, which calls for all parties to engage in negotiations without preconditions based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal, aiming for a comprehensive political solution that is acceptable to all concerned parties.
During the meeting, a significant step was taken as both ministers signed the Terms of Reference to initiate negotiations for a free trade agreement between Morocco and Chile, further solidifying their commitment to mutual economic growth and cooperation.
