China's Ambitious Display at the Marrakech International Airshow

The People's Republic of China is leveraging its participation in the eighth edition of the Marrakech International Airshow to showcase its latest innovations from the Chinese military-industrial complex. This includes a range of advanced weaponry and combat systems, from tactical fighter jets and transport aircraft to cutting-edge drones. Through this strategic presence, Beijing aims to solidify its position as a leading exporter of modern military technology in the global arms market.

The booth of the China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation, commonly referred to as CATIC, serves as a significant attraction for experts and international military delegations at the Marrakech Airshow. Here, the company presents an extensive array of miniature models and visual displays featuring the latest weapon systems and aerial technologies produced by China, reflecting the capabilities of this state-owned enterprise.

Highlighting the J-10CE Fighter and Other Advanced Aircraft

Among the impressive exhibits is a model of the single-seat multi-role fighter jet, the J-10CE, which boasts advanced offensive capabilities, including beyond visual range (BVR) targeting and the ability to engage multiple targets in environments with strong electromagnetic interference. Additionally, this fighter excels in close-quarters combat (dogfighting) at low to medium altitudes, allowing for prolonged aerial engagements.

The J-10CE utilizes a delta-wing design that enhances its stability during high-speed maneuvers, featuring an advanced radar system resistant to electronic jamming, an infrared search and track (IRST) system, and integrated cockpit cameras that enable pilots to detect and track enemy aircraft thermally without activating the radar. Furthermore, one of the standout features of the J-10CE is its real-time data exchange capability with other aircraft, naval vessels, and ground radars, allowing it to target foes detected by other platforms without revealing its own location. With the ability to carry advanced missiles with ranges of up to approximately 150 kilometers and laser-guided bombs, this jet represents a cost-effective and efficient option for many air forces worldwide, particularly following its increased attention after recent aerial confrontations between India and Pakistan, the latter of which includes the J-10CE in its air fleet.

The Chinese display also features the lightweight twin-engine L-15 fighter jets, which serve as an ideal platform for training pilots to operate fourth- and fifth-generation fighters. These aircraft are equipped with advanced radar systems enabling them to engage in air-to-air combat and detect ground and maritime targets while being capable of carrying short- and medium-range missiles.

In addition to the transport and refueling aircraft such as the Y-20 and the medium-sized cargo plane Y-9E, the Chinese pavilion showcases the advanced Z-10ME attack helicopter, which rivals the capabilities of the American Apache helicopters. This helicopter is armed with an advanced arsenal, including CM-502 and TY-90 missiles and 70mm cannons, along with a sophisticated protection and jamming system that enhances its resilience in complex combat environments.

On the unmanned aircraft front, the Chinese military-industrial complex presents a diverse range of drones, including the new Wing Loong-X, which is classified as the world's first unmanned aerial vehicle capable of detecting and identifying submarines. With an impressive endurance of over 40 hours in flight, it is equipped with buoy dispensers, lightweight torpedoes, and integrated sensors for maritime surveillance to facilitate monitoring and targeting operations. Additionally, the Wing Loong 6 drone is also showcased, known for its long flight capabilities and versatility in missions such as reconnaissance, close air support, target designation, and precision strikes. With operational flexibility, ease of maintenance, and rapid readiness for mission execution, this drone measures over 7 meters in length and can fly at speeds of approximately 280 kilometers per hour.
