Shengtai's Ambitious Textile Initiative in Morocco

A significant development in Morocco's textile industry is underway, as the Chinese company Shengtai has announced its plans to establish the "Shengtai Morocco Green Textile Industrial Park." This project, which has recently received approval for its foreign investment license and registration notice from Chinese authorities, is projected to involve an investment of approximately 2.29 billion Moroccan dirhams, equivalent to around 1.716 billion Chinese yuan. The initiative is part of an investment agreement signed between Shengtai and the Moroccan government in March 2025, aiming to bolster the local textile sector.

The core products of this ambitious undertaking will include high-quality cotton yarns, top-grade fabrics, and premium clothing. The project will be executed in two industrial units located in the cities of Skhirat and Fez, encompassing an area of nearly 34 hectares. Additionally, the plan includes the construction of production workshops alongside related facilities, with the entire operation scheduled to be completed in phases over a five-year timeline.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The announced production program is designed to yield an impressive annual output of 100,000 spindles of high-quality cotton yarn, 10,800 tons of dyed and finished fabrics, 15 million meters of woven high-quality fabrics, and 22 million pieces of high-quality clothing. The production units will encompass all stages, from spinning and weaving to dyeing, finishing, and garment manufacturing. This comprehensive approach is set to create a total of 8,500 job opportunities, including 7,000 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect jobs, significantly contributing to the local economy in both Skhirat and Fez.

This development comes on the heels of another Chinese project, Sunrise, which recently secured an investment agreement worth 2.3 billion dirhams to establish two industrial units in the same cities. Both projects are expected to generate a comparable number of jobs, with Sunrise anticipated to provide 7,000 direct jobs and more than 1,500 indirect jobs, totaling 8,500 jobs as well.

The proximity and overlap in production areas between the two projects highlight a strategic alignment in Morocco's textile sector, with both initiatives focusing on the production of yarns, fabrics, and clothing. The Sunrise project, however, also aims to enhance local textile sourcing, reduce logistical costs, and improve Moroccan companies' access to global markets. Similarly, Shengtai's project incorporates multiple stages of the production chain, reflecting a commonality in the nature of the activities outlined for both ventures.
