Christophe Lecourtier Takes the Helm of AFD
Christophe Lecourtier, the current French Ambassador to Morocco, has been appointed as the head of the French Development Agency (AFD), as announced on March 10. This appointment is significant as the AFD is regarded as one of France's key instruments of international influence. The decision was made by President Emmanuel Macron, who selected Lecourtier to succeed Rémy Rioux, who has held the position since 2016 and is set to conclude his term on May 3.
The nomination of Lecourtier is pending approval from the French Parliament, specifically the National Assembly and the Senate, following the necessary validation from the executive branch. Furthermore, it is subject to a favorable opinion from the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life, as outlined in a press release from the Élysée.
At 63 years old, Lecourtier is a graduate of the prestigious École nationale d'administration (ENA). He has previously served as an advisor to several prominent ministers, including Nicolas Sarkozy and Christine Lagarde, during their time in Bercy, a governmental financial district. Lecourtier also led Ubifrance, the agency dedicated to supporting the internationalization of French businesses, before overseeing Business France, which emerged from the merger of Ubifrance and the French Agency for International Investments. He took office as the French Ambassador to Morocco in December 2022.
