Overcoming Challenges: The Tuzcal Summit Expedition
A total of nine mountaineers from Huelva, including three cancer patients, are set to embark on an inspiring ascent of the Tuzcal, the highest mountain in Morocco and all of North Africa, reaching an altitude of 4,167 meters. This ambitious endeavor is part of the 'Mountains Against Cancer' initiative aimed at promoting personal growth and resilience. Scheduled for March 27, this project not only encourages physical activity but also highlights the importance of mental fortitude in the face of adversity.
As stated by the Provincial Council, Juan Daniel Romero, the sports deputy, emphasized that this initiative transcends mere athleticism. It serves as a powerful reminder of the need to raise awareness about cancer and unite various organizations in the fight against the disease. The council fully supports projects like these, recognizing that when faced with illness, it is crucial to band together to demonstrate that recovery is possible.
Therapeutic Benefits of Nature: A New Perspective on Health
The 'Mountains Against Cancer' initiative is a flagship project of the Huelva delegation of the Andalusian Federation of Mountain Sports, Climbing, and Hiking. Its primary goal is to enhance the quality of life for individuals who have experienced or are currently undergoing oncological treatment through direct engagement with nature. Manuel Palanco, the federation's delegate, pointed out that the therapeutic benefits of the mountains—such as fresh air, moderate exercise, and group support—play a significant role in this journey. The philosophy driving this initiative is that climbing is not just about physical exertion; it represents a reconnection with one’s body and life following a cancer diagnosis, transforming patients into mountaineers who redefine their identities beyond illness.
Among the participants is José Antonio Ramos, a member of the Trepamundo mountain and Nordic walking group promoting this challenge. Initially, the plan was for three cancer patients to undertake the ascent independently. However, given the demanding nature of the climb, it became evident that they would require support from a knowledgeable team to facilitate their journey. Ramos explained that the logo of 'Mountains Against Cancer' symbolizes this collaborative spirit: it depicts three climbers, with one already at the summit while the others ascend, illustrating the essential support needed in both life and climbing challenges.
The winding path represented in the logo signifies the life journey, encompassing the difficult transition from a cancer diagnosis to overcoming challenges, much like a mountaineer striving for the peak. For Ramos, the capacity for effort among cancer patients is crucial, especially after receiving a heavy diagnosis, and returning to a semblance of normality becomes a vital aspect of recovery.
Alongside Ramos, four men and four women, including two breast cancer survivors, are eagerly facing this challenge, despite certain limitations imposed by treatment side effects. They approach the climb with enthusiasm, determined to succeed despite potential environmental challenges, including snow on the ascent. The expedition will commence from Imlil, Morocco, situated at 1,740 meters, and will make its way to a refuge at approximately 3,200 meters, covering a positive elevation gain of 1,400 meters in a target timeframe of seven to nine hours. The following day, the group will take on the Tuzcal summit, a nine-kilometer trek expected to take eight to nine hours.
Pilar Maestre, a representative from the Spanish Association Against Cancer and a cancer patient herself, will participate in the climb as a personal challenge. She expressed her love for nature and the mountains, viewing this expedition as an opportunity to navigate the ups and downs of recovery. In addition to this monumental climb, 'Mountains Against Cancer' has organized three hiking activities aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles in collaboration with local cancer associations, welcoming both athletes and non-athletes to enjoy the natural environment. The first event has already taken place in Jabugo, with future hikes planned in Aroche and to San Cristóbal.
The Trepamundo mountain group has expressed gratitude for the support received from the Provincial Council of Huelva, the Andalusian Federation of Mountain Sports, the Spanish Association Against Cancer, and various collaborating companies.
