CNI's Early Warning on Ceuta Invasion
Recent revelations from declassified reports issued by the government of Pedro Sánchez have unveiled crucial intelligence regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta. Notably, the National Intelligence Center (CNI) alerted both the interior ministry, headed by Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and Moroccan intelligence about an impending invasion involving more than 80,000 Moroccan nationals. This warning was issued just one day prior to the massive influx that occurred at the Tarajal border checkpoint.
On August 1, THE OBJECTIVE had already reported that intelligence documents indicated government awareness of a potential crisis in Ceuta leading up to the assault. Among the newly released documents available on the La Moncloa portal are two WhatsApp messages sent by the CNI on July 29 to the Central Special Unit number 3 (UCE-3), a division of the Civil Guard's Information Service responsible for investigating sensitive and complex issues, including national defense matters. These messages were directed to Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano, the chief of staff for the government delegate in Ceuta. They warned that social media platforms, including Facebook, and Moroccan messaging groups were organizing an assault on the Ceuta border fence for the following day, July 30, with plans for individuals to swim across the border.
The total number of participants in these messaging groups exceeded 180,000 individuals. Sources within the government, who were consulted by THE OBJECTIVE, noted that following the distribution of these messages, there were phone calls made to both UCE-3 and the National Immigration and Borders Center (CENIF), which operates within the General Commissioner of Foreigners of the National Police. These communications emphasized the urgency of the situation and the need for preparedness.
