Completion of Safi-Marrakech Desalination Project: A Milestone in Water Supply

Safi-Marrakech Desalination Project Nears Completion

The Safi-Marrakech desalination project is now 98% complete, marking a significant milestone in efforts to combat water scarcity in the region. The Marrakech-Safi Regional Multiservices Company (SRM) has announced that the project is entering its final phase of commissioning. Once operational, this state-of-the-art facility will ensure a reliable supply of potable water for over one million residents across Marrakech, Tamansourt, and the Ourika Valley.

Technical Infrastructure and Capacity Expansion

From a technical perspective, the infrastructure of this ambitious project is built upon 185 kilometers of high-strength steel pipelines, specifically designed to provide safe and sustainable transportation of water. The system is equipped with three main pumping stations capable of delivering a nominal flow rate of 3.2 cubic meters per second. The water produced through the desalination process will be transported to a primary reservoir with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters, located approximately 18 kilometers from Marrakech. This reservoir plays a crucial role in hydraulic regulation before the water is injected into the regional supply and distribution network.

The operational phase is set to commence this April, with an expected annual injection volume of 40 million cubic meters. Plans are already in place to double this capacity starting next June, reaching a total annual transfer volume of 80 million cubic meters. Currently, technical teams are finalizing compliance testing and configuring the facilities to ensure optimal performance.
