Concerns Arise Over New Antenna Installation Near School in Marrakesh
On August 2, 2026, the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH), specifically its branch in Menara, Marrakesh, raised alarms regarding the installation of a new antenna located adjacent to the Mohammed VI Technical Secondary School in the Azli neighborhood. This installation occurred during the summer vacation period, without any prior notification or consultation with the school's administration, educational staff, or the parents of the students residing in the institution's boarding facilities, alongside the neighboring community.
The AMDH expressed significant concern that the approval for this antenna installation violates several international standards, particularly the Convention on the Rights of the Child (Article 24), and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (Article 12). Furthermore, it contradicts Article 31 of the Moroccan Constitution, which guarantees the right to health and a safe environment, as well as Articles 12 and 13, which emphasize the principles of participation and consultation.
The organization has directed its criticism towards public authorities responsible for granting the installation permit, including the local council and the National Agency for the Regulation of Telecommunications, which is expected to ensure that projects comply with legal standards, along with the executing companies. The AMDH has called for the immediate revocation of the permit, highlighting that it infringes upon fundamental rights, and has urged an investigation into the circumstances behind the permit's issuance, demanding accountability for anyone involved in breaching the law or disregarding the rights of the students.
