Potential Impacts of New Foreign Legislation on Morocco's Call Center Sector
In a recent parliamentary session, Khaled Siti, a representative of the National Union of Labor in Morocco, raised urgent concerns regarding the ramifications of new foreign legislations on the call center and outsourcing industry within Morocco. He cautioned that these developments pose a significant threat to thousands of job positions within this vital sector. Siti emphasized that call centers and outsourcing services are crucial for generating employment opportunities for the youth in Morocco, particularly in major cities such as Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier, Meknes, and Fez. Furthermore, this sector plays a pivotal role in attracting foreign currency and enhancing the national economy's appeal.
Siti's written inquiry addressed to the Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment, and Skills highlighted the substantial challenges that the industry is currently facing. He pointed out that the introduction of new regulations in partner countries, particularly France, which plans to impose stricter controls on telemarketing activities, directly impacts Moroccan companies engaged in this field, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.
The parliamentary representative expressed the professional community's growing fears regarding the potential closure of numerous call centers and the subsequent layoffs of thousands of employees. This concern is exacerbated by the absence of supportive measures or proactive strategies to safeguard the industry and mitigate the effects of this looming social and economic crisis.
Government's Response to Safeguard Employment
In light of these developments, Siti urged the Moroccan government to outline the actions it intends to undertake to address the impacts of legislative changes in European countries on the local call center sector. Specific queries included the possibility of implementing an urgent plan to protect threatened job positions, especially for young individuals working in call centers. He also sought clarity on the anticipated measures to support small and medium enterprises operating in this arena, enabling them to adapt to international legal changes.
Moreover, he inquired about the government's approach towards restructuring the sector to ensure its sustainability while preserving workers' rights. Siti further called for a clear explanation of the social measures that could be adopted to alleviate the potential impact of job losses on employees if the sector faces adverse effects due to these developments.
