Consumer Protection Observatory Questions Rising Meat Prices Despite Imports

Consumer Concerns Over Rising Meat Prices Amid Increased Imports

The Moroccan Consumer Protection Observatory has expressed its deep concern regarding the significant rise in red meat prices, particularly as the holy month of Ramadan begins. Traditionally, consumers anticipate a decrease in food prices during this period, which typically sees an increase in demand. However, recent reports indicate that the price of lamb has surged to over 130 dirhams per kilogram in Casablanca, alongside notable increases in beef prices and related products.

This situation has raised alarm among Moroccan consumers, who are questioning the reasons behind such price hikes, especially since prices tend to escalate every Ramadan despite repeated promises of reductions from authorities. The observatory is particularly interested in understanding the effectiveness of market monitoring measures and the impact of speculation on price increases. It also questions why the influx of imported meat has not led to lower consumer prices.

According to a statement from the observatory, data from professionals in the market indicate that red meat prices have risen sharply with the onset of Ramadan. Reports show that lamb is now priced around 130 dirhams per kilogram, while minced meat has reached approximately 120 dirhams, with certain cuts even hitting 140 dirhams. In contrast, there has been a noticeable decline in consumer demand due to reduced purchasing power, leading many citizens to buy only limited quantities of meat, while some are forced to forgo it altogether.

The Moroccan Consumer Protection Observatory warns that the ongoing trend of rising prices could directly affect household consumption, resulting in decreased red meat consumption among families, increased pressure on their budgets, and a shift toward cheaper dietary alternatives. The observatory emphasizes that safeguarding consumers' purchasing power is a collective responsibility that requires stricter price controls in markets, combating illegal speculation and intermediaries, supporting local production chains for livestock breeders, and promoting the establishment of model markets that offer products at reasonable prices. Furthermore, the observatory advocates for solidarity initiatives aimed at providing foodstuffs at affordable prices.
