Costa Rica Endorses Morocco's Autonomy Initiative for Sahara Dispute Resolution

The Republic of Costa Rica has publicly supported Morocco's autonomy initiative regarding the Sahara region, asserting that it represents the most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic foundation for achieving a political solution to the longstanding dispute. During discussions in Rabat, Costa Rican Foreign Minister Arnoldo André Tinoco and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita highlighted that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could serve as the most viable resolution to the regional conflict surrounding the Moroccan Sahara.

This endorsement was formally expressed in a Joint Declaration that followed their talks, during which Costa Rica expressed its commitment to engage based on this position across various levels—political, diplomatic, economic, and consular. The emphasis on a multi-faceted approach underscores Costa Rica's strategic intent to support Morocco's sovereignty and its initiatives related to the Sahara region.

Moreover, Costa Rica welcomed the recent adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), recognizing the significance of the issue to Morocco and acknowledging the positive momentum that has been generated under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This recognition highlights Costa Rica's alignment with Morocco’s objectives and its awareness of the importance of the Sahara issue in regional stability.

In the same Joint Declaration, both ministers reiterated their backing for the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, emphasizing their support for ongoing efforts aimed at advancing the political process toward a conclusive resolution of this regional dispute. This collaborative stance not only strengthens bilateral relations but also reflects a shared commitment to peace and stability in the region.
