Costa Rica's U17 Women's Team Falls Short Against Mexico in World Cup Qualifier

Costa Rica's Quest for World Cup Glory Cut Short

The Costa Rican U17 Women's National Team faced a tough challenge as they went head-to-head with Mexico in a decisive match for qualification to the 2026 Women's World Cup in Morocco. Unfortunately, the team was unable to secure their spot, ending their hopes of participating in the prestigious tournament.

The match commenced with both teams displaying remarkable intensity, particularly in their defensive strategies and efforts to gain control of the ball. Throughout the initial 30 minutes, both sides created several opportunities to score, but the goalkeepers—Costa Rica's Ashley Quesada and Mexico's Ania López—were exceptional, effectively keeping their nets untouched. Just before halftime, at the 43rd minute, Mexican captain Citlalli Reyes broke the deadlock by outmaneuvering Quesada in a one-on-one situation, allowing Mexico to head into the break with a narrow lead.

Second Half Dynamics and Final Outcome

The second half maintained the high level of intensity established in the first, yet as the minutes progressed, both teams seemed to shift focus to ball possession rather than offensive threats, resulting in fewer shots on goal. Despite having less control of the ball, the Mexican squad consistently applied pressure on Costa Rica's defense. In a pivotal moment at the 81-minute mark, Kemberly García scored Mexico's second goal by skillfully converting a cross from Reyes just outside the penalty area, effectively sealing their qualification for the U17 Women's World Cup in Morocco.

With this loss, Costa Rica's journey came to an end, leaving the team to look forward to the next qualifying round to secure a future chance at World Cup participation, especially as Puerto Rico has qualified as the second-best team in the tournament.

The starting lineup for Costa Rica included Ashley Quesada, Brithany Arronis, Tiara Ruiz, Avril Pérez, Isska Chaverri, Emma Azofeifa, Cameron Mora, Lucía Paniagua, Nubia Medina, Verónica Solano, and Naydelin Barquero, under the guidance of coach Edgar Rodríguez. Meanwhile, Mexico fielded Ania López, Emily Delgado, Vanessa Paredes, Bianka Arredondo, Fernanda Monroy, Dafne Sánchez, Mia Urbano, Citlalli Reyes, María Pérez, Ixchel Uscanga, and Shaddai Núñez, coached by Miguel Gamero.
