Cycling for Peace: The Journey of Miguel Masaïsaï from Goma to Rabat
Miguel Masaïsaï, a dedicated cyclist from the Democratic Republic of Congo, embarked on an ambitious journey on May 1, 2026, under the banner of his initiative "Pedals for Peace." His aim was to cover an astonishing 14,000 kilometers, connecting Goma in eastern DR Congo to Rabat, Morocco, while promoting messages of peace, unity, and solidarity among the communities he traversed. Tragically, this inspiring journey was cut short when Masaïsaï died in a traffic accident on September 18 in Ouesso, located in northern Congo-Brazzaville. His passing has evoked a profound sense of loss and has brought attention to the message of peace he fervently advocated.
As he traveled, Masaïsaï managed to cover a remarkable distance of over 6,500 kilometers in just 67 days, arriving in Kinshasa on August 5, 2026. He resumed his journey shortly after, heading towards Congo-Brazzaville. However, the unfortunate incident that led to his death occurred just days later. His older sister, Ornella Masaïsaï, recalled the devastating moment the family learned of his demise, stating that the passport found next to his body confirmed it was indeed Miguel.
Following his untimely death, a heart-wrenching procession took place in Kinshasa, where cyclists accompanied his coffin through the city. The coffin was first brought to Ngobila beach before being taken to the morgue of the Cinquantenaire hospital. This poignant farewell was marked by the participation of fellow cyclists, who honored Masaïsaï’s legacy as a champion for peace.
In the wake of his death, misinformation spread rapidly on social media, with false reports claiming that he had reached Cameroon. The Congolese news agency had to intervene, clarifying the truth and highlighting the tragedy of his passing. Miguel Masaïsaï was only 25 years old at the time of his death, leaving behind a legacy of hope and a call for peace that resonates deeply in the hearts of many.
