Czech Republic Advocates for Moroccan Autonomy Solution
On Thursday, the Czech Republic articulated its position regarding the ongoing dispute over the Sahara, stating that "genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty constitutes the most feasible solution." This significant statement was made during a Joint Declaration signed in Rabat, following a meeting between Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, and Petr Macinka, Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is making his inaugural visit to the Kingdom.
The Joint Declaration highlights that the Czech Ambassador to Morocco will be traveling to the Sahara region to facilitate visits from Czech entrepreneurs and to bolster collaborative economic initiatives. In a noteworthy expansion of diplomatic relations, it also emphasizes that the Czech Embassy in Rabat will now extend its consular services to the Sahara region, mirroring its approach to the rest of Morocco. This move underscores the Czech Republic's commitment to aligning its diplomatic, economic, and consular actions with its stance on the Moroccan Sahara.
Additionally, the Czech Republic expressed its support for the recent United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), emphasizing that Morocco's 2007 autonomy proposal is viewed as the most appropriate, credible, and realistic foundation for achieving a fair and enduring political resolution to the conflict. The Joint Declaration further affirms the mutual support of both ministers for the United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy regarding the Sahara, reflecting their shared commitment to advancing the political process aimed at achieving a definitive solution to this regional dispute.
