Misinterpretation of Celebration Video Misleads Public Perception
Recently, a video circulated online purportedly showing migrants in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta claiming they would be traveling to Germany. However, this assertion is entirely false. The footage in question actually depicts jubilant individuals in Casablanca, Morocco, celebrating the national football team's victory over Canada during the World Cup. This misrepresentation has sparked unnecessary fears and fueled anti-migrant sentiments following a significant influx of people from Morocco into Ceuta, where approximately 50,000 individuals reportedly arrived on the night of July 30-31, according to various media reports and the Spanish government.
The misleading video features a young boy allegedly stating, "Allah has brought us here to Europe. In the coming days, we will travel to Germany." This clip garnered over 150,000 views on TikTok as of August 10, 2026. However, the video was actually recorded on July 4, prior to the events in Ceuta, rendering its alleged translation and context completely inaccurate.
Fact-Checking Uncovers the Truth Behind the Footage
To investigate the authenticity of the video, CORRECTIV.Faktencheck utilized reverse image searches to trace the logo visible in the upper right corner of the clip. This investigation led them to a Facebook page belonging to a media outlet called "Zenatanews," which is based in the Zenata neighborhood of Casablanca. A post featuring the same video was found on their page, dated July 4, 2026, further confirming that it is unrelated to the recent developments in Ceuta. Zenatanews itself commented on the video in Arabic, stating: "فرحة هستيرية وتصريح للتاريخ من هذا الشاب المغربي: 'ها شنو غانديرو لفرنسا!'" which translates to "Hysterical joy and a historic statement from this young Moroccan: 'I tell you what we will do to France!'" This commentary, along with the festive atmosphere of the individuals in the background, aligns the video with the context of the 2026 World Cup.
Furthermore, the video explicitly mentions its location, with translations indicating that the boy states, "We are in Bernoussi-Casablanca." CORRECTIV.Faktencheck was able to verify this claim through visual evidence in the video and Google Maps. The footage features a dental practice and two shops, all of which are accurately listed on Google Maps in the Sidi Bernoussi neighborhood of Casablanca. Despite reaching out for a comment from the TikTok account responsible for the video, there was no response by the publication deadline.
