Denmark Affirms Support for Moroccan Sovereignty
In a significant diplomatic development, Morocco has recently garnered the support of Denmark regarding its proposed Autonomy Plan for the Sahara region, which is poised to be a focal point in the upcoming UN Security Council discussions scheduled for late October. During a visit to Copenhagen on September 5, 2026, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita engaged in talks with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, securing Denmark’s endorsement of Morocco’s initiative aimed at resolving the longstanding regional conflict in a manner that respects Moroccan sovereignty.
Following their discussions, Minister Løkke described the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as a "credible" and "serious" proposal that contributes significantly to the ongoing UN-led process. He emphasized that this plan provides a robust foundation for achieving a mutually acceptable solution among all involved parties. Furthermore, he reiterated Denmark's commitment to the European Union's stance, which has welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, endorsing the Autonomy Plan under Morocco's sovereignty. This backing is particularly noteworthy as Denmark currently serves as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, where crucial decisions regarding the Sahara and the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) are anticipated next month.
