Tragedy Strikes as Migrants Attempt Crossings to Ceuta

The perilous journey of migrants from Morocco to Ceuta has resulted in at least eleven confirmed deaths, as reported by the Moroccan Ministry of Interior. In addition, numerous individuals remain unaccounted for, leading to a distressing situation for families who are desperately seeking information about their loved ones. The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) is actively working to assist these families in locating their missing relatives.

Families Gather at the Border in Search of Answers

For several days, families have been congregating at the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, anxiously waiting for news of their relatives who attempted to cross the barrier. Jamila, a member of the AMDH, expressed the deep emotional toll this situation has taken on families: "There are families from various cities in Morocco, not just from Tétouan or Ceuta, who are waiting day and night for any information regarding their children, brothers, or other family members." The AMDH has been contacted by around thirty families who have lost contact with their loved ones for several days. The organization is stepping in to help investigate these disappearances, although the challenging conditions of the crossing complicate communication efforts. Jamila noted that "most migrants have lost their phones during the journey or are unable to charge them, making it difficult to locate those who have gone missing. There are a significant number of individuals, potentially dozens, and we will strive to gather information on their whereabouts."

To assist these families, the AMDH is leveraging social media and reaching out directly to reception centers in Ceuta. They are attempting to gather information by seeking contacts within Ceuta and using photographs to identify missing persons. Despite some successful searches conducted by the AMDH, resources to aid families in locating their loved ones among the vast number of migrants remain limited. According to Spanish authorities, over 50,000 individuals have attempted to cross the border into Ceuta.
