Marrakech is set to welcome a new wave of travelers as Sun D'Or, a subsidiary of the Israeli airline El Al, announces the commencement of direct flights from Tel Aviv starting November 16. This exciting new service will operate bi-weekly, specifically on Mondays and Wednesdays, with round-trip fares commencing at approximately MAD 5,990, equating to around $599. The launch fare includes a LITE ticket, which permits passengers to bring along a trolley bag and a carry-on, while each flight is expected to cover the distance in about six hours. However, it is important to note that the inaugural flight is pending final regulatory approvals.
Gal Gershon, CEO of Sun D'Or, highlighted the decision to introduce this route as a direct response to the growing demand from Israeli travelers. He emphasized that Marrakech, characterized by its vibrant markets, rich culture, and unique ambiance, makes for an exotic destination ideal for short getaways. This new route will join a portfolio of 12 other winter destinations that Sun D'Or is offering, which includes popular spots such as Larnaca and Paphos in Cyprus, Batumi and Tbilisi in Georgia, and several cities across Europe including Lyon in France and Verona in Italy. Tickets can be purchased through the El Al website and various travel agents, allowing frequent flyers to earn and redeem points during their travels.
With this initiative, El Al is joining other Israeli airlines that have recently reestablished direct flights to Marrakech. Notably, Arkia was the first to resume this service on August 19, 2023, ahead of their originally planned schedule, and currently operates two flights weekly. Israir followed suit with a once-weekly service that faced temporary suspension due to operational challenges in securing flight rights. After a brief disruption, the required authorizations were granted, allowing for the resumption of flights.
The backdrop of this renewed air service comes after a turbulent period in which all direct flights between Israel and Morocco had ceased following the escalation of violence in Gaza in October 2023. Prior to this, the two nations had enjoyed a renewed relationship stemming from the normalization agreements established in December 2020, which reinstated diplomatic ties between Rabat and Tel Aviv. This deep-seated relationship is further underscored by the significant Moroccan-Jewish community, which maintains strong connections to Morocco.
Moreover, the announcement of these direct flights coincides with a recent diplomatic engagement in New York, where Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar met with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita. This meeting, which took place shortly after the anniversary of the Abraham Accords, solidified commitments to enhance bilateral relations, including the reinstatement of direct flights and the appointment of ambassadors.
