Exploring the Best Cities to Live and Visit in 2026

Time Out, in collaboration with Intrepid Travel, has released its 10th annual ranking of the 50 best cities in the world for 2026. This comprehensive ranking is based on a survey of 24,000 residents from 150 cities globally, alongside votes from over 100 Time Out specialists. The criteria for the ranking encompass a wide array of factors, including cultural offerings, nightlife, affordability, walkability, gastronomy, museums, parks, and the overall sentiment of residents regarding happiness, cost of living, and quality of life. Notably, this year's survey expanded to include new dimensions such as romantic relationships and a sense of community belonging.

Ultimately, Time Out presents a list of the most exciting cities to live in and explore in 2026, featuring a mix of small towns, medium-sized cities, and global metropolises. This year, European cities dominate the list with 19 entries, followed by Asian metropolises with 12. Notably, Melbourne, Australia, emerges as the top city, celebrated for its impressive lineup of major sporting events, including the Australian Open, the Australian Grand Prix, AFL finals, and the Boxing Day Test cricket match. Melbourne is also famed for its vibrant restaurants, trendy neighborhoods, record stores, art galleries, historical landmarks, colorful street murals, and world-renowned gardens.

Highlighting Africa's Representation in Global Rankings

In this prestigious ranking, only four African cities made the cut: Cape Town, Marrakech, Cairo, and Lagos. Cape Town, ranked as the 6th best city in the world, dazzles visitors from the moment they arrive at its award-winning airport. Nestled between Table Mountain and the ocean, this legislative capital of South Africa is renowned for its stunning scenery, pristine beaches, authentic neighborhoods, and incredibly friendly locals. According to Time Out's editor-in-chief, "Cape Town captivates you from the moment you arrive." The city boasts an impressive 86% of residents who describe it as the most beautiful city, along with high ratings for green spaces and natural beauty. With a flourishing tourism sector, Cape Town is also a hub for cultural and sporting events, showcasing its exceptional culinary landscape led by Michelin-starred chefs who utilize local ingredients.

Marrakech, known as the "city where you feel at home," ranks 24th globally. This ancient city, a melting pot of cultures and Morocco's top tourist destination, features stunning riads, beautiful green spaces, and a vibrant nightlife. The survey revealed that 82% of residents feel a sense of community in Marrakech, showcasing the city's welcoming atmosphere. The rich culinary scene, with many high-end restaurants, also adds to its allure, making it a favorite among tourists and contributing to Morocco's status as Africa's leading tourist destination.

The 42nd spot goes to Cairo, described as "chaotic but enchanting." This vibrant metropolis uniquely blends ancient heritage with modern life, housing the iconic Pyramids of Giza and the recently opened Grand Egyptian Museum, which will showcase the complete collection of Tutankhamun's treasures from November 2025. Cairo's rich nightlife, world-class museums, and dynamic cultural scene make it Africa's most dynamic city, with significant investments in hospitality and tourism centered around its pharaonic history. In the survey, 72% of residents praised the local cuisine, and the same percentage reported a strong sense of community belonging.

Finally, Lagos, Africa's most populous city, secured the 47th position. Known for its energetic and electrifying atmosphere, Lagos is often considered chaotic yet vibrant. Its nightlife, characterized by clubs, restaurants, and bars, particularly in Victoria Island, reflects the city's cultural richness. As Nigeria's economic powerhouse, Lagos is steeped in a dynamic cultural scene, highlighted by its thriving afrobeat music and the prolific Nollywood film industry. The survey indicated that 75% of residents find it easy to make friends in this bustling city, further emphasizing its welcoming nature.
