Dismantling of a Rural Terrorist Cell: Theft, Burglary, and Money Laundering

Dismantling of a Terrorist Cell Operating in Rural Areas

The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), a branch of the DGST, has announced the successful dismantling of a terrorist cell composed of six individuals operating across Kénitra, Casablanca, and surrounding rural areas. This development highlights a concerning trend of terrorist activities migrating from urban centers to the countryside. These individuals are suspected of engaging in criminal acts driven by extremist ideologies, including theft, burglary, and money laundering, all of which are executed through a structured modus operandi specifically targeting agricultural properties.

Criminal Activities and Arrests

On April 5 and 6, law enforcement operations led to the arrest of six suspects in various cities, notably Kénitra, Casablanca, Sidi Taïbi, and the Dar El Gueddari region. Investigations revealed that the apprehended individuals formed a well-organized cell motivated by extreme ideologies, involved in organized criminal activities. The BCIJ has indicated that extensive surveillance and undercover operations facilitated the accumulation of evidence linking these suspects to multiple criminal offenses aimed at generating illicit profits.

Members of this cell specifically targeted rural areas near Kénitra and Sidi Slimane, focusing on livestock farms to steal cattle and other valuable assets. The proceeds from these criminal endeavors were then sold in local markets, particularly in Joumaa Shim in the Safi province and Zemamra in the Sidi Bennour province. This scheme effectively allowed them to launder the money obtained, aligning with an ideological rationale described as "legitimization of the spoils." During the searches conducted in relation to this case, authorities seized extremist literature, bladed weapons, and cash suspected to be derived from criminal activities. Furthermore, investigators confiscated logistical equipment, including utility vehicles, a motorcycle, and items such as masks and gloves.

The suspects are currently in custody, undergoing a thorough investigation overseen by the relevant terrorism prosecution authorities. Ongoing inquiries aim to identify potential connections, trace all criminal activities, and apprehend any accomplices involved in these unlawful operations.
