The Journey of DJ Lady S: From Antwerp to the World
DJ Lady S, also known as Sahira Chadouli, represents the essence of her Moroccan heritage while captivating audiences worldwide with her exceptional DJ skills. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, to parents from Tangier, she was immersed in a culturally rich and musically vibrant environment. Her father’s involvement in radio programming and her brother’s pursuits on stage significantly influenced her early affinity for music. As a teenager, Sahira’s passion for hip-hop and R&B ignited, leading her to embark on her journey as a DJ. By the age of 16, she was already stirring excitement on dance floors, laying the foundation for a professional career in music.
Reflecting on her unique upbringing, Lady S shared her experiences with Yabiladi, expressing, "I had a different youth from my peers. Like them, I went to school, but our daily lives were not the same. During the week, I was in class, and on weekends, I was behind the decks." She also recounted the challenges of concealing her artistic ambitions, feeling the need to blend in with her classmates during high school.
In her pursuit of music, Lady S often begged her brother to take her to clubs, where she would sometimes sneak in to witness live performances. On occasions when her brother was performing, she seized the opportunity to experiment with mixing tracks in front of an audience, igniting her passion for DJing even further. However, her age was not the only obstacle she faced on her path to success.
Overcoming Challenges in a Male-Dominated Industry
As a young female DJ in the late 90s, Sahira struggled to find role models who shared her background. "Around 23 years ago, I was not only one of the few female DJs but also a Moroccan and Muslim DJ. I faced criticism in a heavily male-dominated scene," she explained. To combat stereotypes, she often dressed in a way that allowed her to blend in with her male counterparts.
Despite these challenges, her dedication and talent eventually earned her recognition. "Over time, people recognized my commitment, saw my skills on the decks, and witnessed how I could ignite a crowd. That’s when I earned everyone’s respect. I earned it through hard work," she stated. Sahira noted that during the first decade of her career, she operated without the support of a record label or the benefits of social media, relying solely on self-production and her network.
Her breakthrough came when a friend of her brother needed a DJ for an event, allowing her to make her debut in front of an audience. This initial opportunity propelled her into the world of DJing, where she would go on to perform at renowned events such as Tomorrowland and beyond.
In her performances, DJ Lady S emphasizes that being a DJ transcends merely playing tracks; it’s about understanding the music’s origins, exploring diverse genres, and respecting the artistry of fellow musicians. "I spent countless hours practicing, allowing me to craft my stage identity," she remarked. Today, she proudly acknowledges her international reputation, attributing her success to her unwavering dedication and talent.
Reflecting on the evolution of the industry, she noted, "Twenty years later, though the scene remains male-dominated, the role of women has transformed significantly. I am proud of this change and having paved the way for female DJs while wholeheartedly embracing my affinity for hip-hop and R&B."
DJ Lady S's journey is not only a testament to her resilience but also an embodiment of the cultural connections she fosters through her music. In her current home in the United States, she has rekindled her ties to Morocco, showcasing her heritage through her art. Notably, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, she was part of the musical lineup for the halftime entertainment at the Morocco-Brazil match, creating a vibrant atmosphere that merged Moroccan and Brazilian music.
"I wanted both teams and their supporters to have a great time, and they did," she expressed, highlighting the overwhelming love and appreciation she received from the Moroccan community. "I felt celebrated. People came up to me personally and contacted me on social media to thank me for representing Moroccans internationally, especially during the World Cup. I felt very proud of my roots and my country."
Beyond her contributions to major events, DJ Lady S takes immense pride in showcasing the rich cultural vibrancy of Morocco and the MENA region. "We’re seeing so many artists from the MENA region showcase their talents and perfect their craft. Morocco and the MENA region are brimming with talent right now, and that fills me with pride," she concluded, embodying the spirit of a true cultural ambassador.
